Although this is a bit long winded and we considered trimming it down, the GLWSL feels that this player testimonial to our skills clinic is so passionate and well written that we decided to leave it as is!
"I am a Soccer Mom. My kids have been playing soccer since they were 3 years old. My oldest is 10 and my youngest is 7 years old. They LOVE the sport and are growing more and more in love as time continues to elapse. Their love for the sport is infectious. It did not take long for me to catch the bug as I found myself wanting to step on the pitch and play! The opportunity presented itself about 18 months ago, and I jumped in. I found a new network of amazing women who share this energetic passion for the sport.
Athletics have always been a part of my life. Much of my adolescent life was spent on the basketball court. I even met my husband on the basketball court in college. The time spent on and off the court with my teammates are cherished memories. I thought that these would be the only memories I’d have of competitive sports. I’m thankful to have been wrong. Little did I know, I would find this passion for a team sport (that, mind you, I never played before) in my (ahem) mid/late thirties.
My first touch on the ball was in a clinic hosted for soccer moms interested in learning more about the game their kids are playing. I went to this clinic with my friend and fellow soccer mom. We were both so happy to see a new group of women with athletic drive, playing competitively! In that clinic, we learned the basics and I was hooked! My friend and I immediately started looking for a team to join!
Fast forward 18 months. I have now played on SEVERAL soccer teams; indoor, outdoor, all-women, and co-ed. Each type of game brings a different challenge. I wanted to learn more about how to play the game better. The Great Lakes Women’s Soccer League (GLWSL) advertised a skills clinic for those looking to improve their performance. Perfect! I signed up and was excited to hear that we would have an actual COACH working with us!
In the clinic, Steve (aforementioned coach) taught us the importance of a dynamic warm up versus a static stretch. (I was out of breath in the warm-up! Oh no! What had I gotten myself into?!) We moved on the basic skills (passing, dribbling, etc). These basics were built upon, and became drills (dribbling and passing out of pressure, changing direction, etc). Each day focused on a different aspect of the game. I felt myself growing more confident in my skills and was excited to play with my teams.
The third week of the clinic focused heavily on shooting. I generally gravitate toward the defensive end of the field (all those basketball skills help me there) so I wasn’t expecting much for myself in this part. In fact, I was looking at the shooting clinic as a means of learning how to kick a better goal kick. Never did I expect to USE these skills to actually score a goal! Wouldn’t you know, in my co-ed game just two days after this shooting clinic, I SCORED 2 GOALS! ME! That defensively minded player who doesn’t play forward! I was so excited! A new window opened. I don’t have to be married to the back half of the field anymore. I can push forward with confidence and find the back of the net.
The skills clinic, coached by Steve, dramatically improved my performance. More importantly, it increased my confidence! I have a better understanding of how the game is played. It has made me a more competitive player, pushing myself to reach farther. This is why I love competitive sports!
A door to the wonderful world of athletics has reopened. This time, the door leads to soccer fields, both indoor and out. I am charging through, bringing as many people as I can to join me on this adventure. I may not be the best on the pitch, but I feel great about every minute I’ve spent on it. Come on Soccer Moms! Join me in becoming a Soccer Player! Your kids will LOVE IT! Mine do."
